A Guide to Natural Hormone Therapy

Choosing the Right Level of Natural Hormone Therapy

There are five levels of therapy for hormonal imbalances. In the most severe cases, it is necessary to start at level 1 and gradually progress to higher levels as health and function improve. When a gland has been removed or destroyed, it may not be possible to advance past level 1 or 2 in some cases. It is impossible to predict with absolute certainty, however, since even a single cell of glandular tissue remaining may regenerate an entire endocrine gland with full functional capacity. In the future, it may also become possible to dedifferentiate (perhaps in vitro) and redifferentiate specific tissue cells, by seeding undifferentiated cells into the bio-energy field site of the missing gland, as well. In the meantime, 99% of those with hormonal imbalances can begin the process of re-energizing remaining cells, rejuvenating their function, regenerating full glandular capacity, cleansing the matrix of the glandular tissue, and finally, balancing and regulating hormonal functions in the body through an individually optimal diet and lifestyle.

Here are the five levels of hormone therapy:

1. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the most commonly practiced method, but the lowest level, in which a missing or deficient hormone is substituted for by either a synthetic or natural hormone. Synthetic hormones often show energetic stress on the liver compared to their natural counterparts, so, for example, ask the prescribing physician to substitute Armour Thyroid (natural prescription) for Synthroid (synthetic) in severe hypothyroidism.

2. Hormone Precursor Therapy supplies intermediate metabolites out of which the body can produce more of its own hormones as needed. This bypasses earlier pathways in the production of the end hormone but stimulates the body’s own production systems. This approach may include Pregnenolone, DHEA, and Progesterone.

3. Hormone Support Therapy provides needed herbal, nutritional, or glandular building blocks for the body’s own hormone production. As an example, for the thyroid, one might use Kelp to supply organic iodine, a nutritional supplement with copper and zinc, and a glandular thyroid tissue to supply protomorphogens and other building blocks for thyroid function and repair. Support may also include detoxification and drainage, for example, to remove mercury from the thyroid gland to unblock key enzymatic pathways, such as cellular ATP energy production, since the thyroid typically accumulates the highest concentration of mercury of any body tissue from silver amalgam fillings.

4. Hormone Stimulation Therapy may utilize homeopathic hormones or sarcodes (healthy glandulars) to stimulate glandular regeneration, reactivation, and hormone production. For example, fish raised in a tank with a sealed glass ampule of a homeopathic hormone developed significantly differently from controls without this purely energetic resonance stimulation.

5. Hormone Regulation Therapy arranges lifestyle and environmental conditions to adjust the control mechanisms governing hormone production. Therapies may include exercise (e.g. for diabetes or hypothyroid), light (full spectrum or color therapy: see Color Therapy Report), sound (e.g. music therapy for stress reduction or specific tonal resonance effects), diet (e.g. phytoestrogens from soy foods), detoxification for enhanced liver function, etc.

Overview of Natural Hormone Therapy

While the endocrine system is itself part of body System 4: the Communication system, the different glands communicate with and regulate all 5 body systems. This chart shows the major endocrine glands & hormones and their relationship to the 5 body tissue systems.

Hormone Precursor Spotlight:

D H E A

Is there a common factor in aging and degenerative diseases? What if there were one single factor in the body that was found to be low in aging, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and chronic fatigue? That factor has been found and confirmed by over 40,000 studies and publications. It is low blood levels of the hormone DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone).

Dr. Julian Whittaker says of DHEA, “I can’t imagine practicing medicine without it.” Why are doctors like Julian Whittaker, Alan Gaby, Depak Chopra, Ward Dean, and Robert Atkins all talking about DHEA? DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands and is called the “Mother hormone” by top DHEA researchers because it is necessary in order to produce so many other hormones, in both men and women. Whenever the body needs to produce hormones like estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, or estrogen, it calls on its stores of DHEA. DHEA levels peak at around age 20, and unlike any other hormone, show a linear decline with age in both men and women thereafter. DHEA is considered one of the most reliable measures of biological age. Besides aging, chronic stress is the biggest factor that causes a depletion of DHEA levels, since your body uses it up every time you make adrenaline.

In one study of 5000 “normal, healthy” women, every single woman whose DHEA level was less than 10% of normal for their age eventually developed and died of breast cancer. The low DHEA levels appeared up to 9 years ahead of the cancer diagnosis, however. Also, there was not a single woman with above-average DHEA levels that developed cancer. Even in rats bred genetically to get cancer, DHEA supplementation blocked the development of cancer in 100% of all cases.

A twelve-year study of men between ages 50 and 79 found a 48% reduction in cardiovascular disease and a 36% decrease in death from any cause associated with increased levels of DHEA. At Johns Hopkins, rabbits with atherosclerosis that were given supplemental DHEA showed a 50% reduction in the plaque in their arteries. An article in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that DHEA protects against early death even in people with no heart disease.

Researchers at Temple University report that DHEA blocks factors that promote the growth of cancer cells as well as the production of fat. According to one researcher there, “there isn’t any question, DHEA is a very effective anti-obesity agent.” In mice, it reduces excess fat by 50% according to Longevity Magazine. Like GTF Chromium, it causes a reduction in fat and increased lean muscle tissue even without any improvement in eating or exercise habits. Imagine what it could do if you combine DHEA and GTF Chromium (or a combination of citrin and chromium) with better diet and health habits!

Old mice given DHEA supplements regain the vigor of youth, and their coats become sleek and glossy again. Even cancer, whether naturally occurring or artificially induced, disappears. Obese mice regain their normal weight. Immune function increases. Mice with diabetes improve dramatically. Why should people have access to these kinds of benefits, and perhaps even more, combining DHEA supplementation with other wonderful products like Chromium and Microwater?

DHEA has been shown to improve memory in aging mice. DHEA levels in Alzheimer’s disease patients are 48% lower than in people the same age without the disease. Why not combine DHEA supplementation with ginkgo, which has also been proven beneficial in these same people.

A woman who had suffered her whole life from learning disabilities and poor memory was treated at the New York University School of Medicine with DHEA. On low doses, she showed improvement in learning and memory, as well as better sleep within one week. On higher doses, she showed further increases in short and long-term memory, at age 47 she was able for the first time in her life to successfully establish and operate her own small business.

A recent article in Popular Science was titled “Could DHEA be the answer to prolonged life?” The article pointed out that Americans spend $100 billion each year to try to look younger. Now they can actually get younger. Many people report clearer thinking, higher energy levels, disappearance of aches and pains, weight loss, and many other rejuvenating benefits. This all makes sense because chronic stress that depletes DHEA also locks the body into a catabolic mode in which it progressively breaks down without cycling through an anabolic rebuilding phase. This can result in premature aging, muscle wasting, diabetes, fatigue, osteoporosis, undesirable redistribution of body fat, hypertension, fluid retention, lowered immune function, and impaired mental function. Does any of this sound like anyone you know?

Life Magazine reported that “a leading U.S. authority on the hormone reports that in laboratory animals high-dose DHEA feedings reduce body fat by one third, prevent atherosclerosis, alleviate diabetes, reduce the risk of cancer, enhance the immune response, inhibit the development of certain autoimmune diseases and extend the normal life span of mice by 20%.”

Until now DHEA has only been available by prescription, and only a handful of compounding pharmacies in the whole country were capable of filling the prescription. Furthermore, most medical doctors do not prescribe DHEA in the first place, so first, you would have to search for a physician who knows anything about the product. Now you can get real DHEA, which is extracted from a bovine source, as well as DHEA, synthesized from wild yam precursors (an energetically biocompatible form for vegans). The bovine source is usually more effective because it is in the sulfate-bound form, as is 90% of the DHEA in the body, making it approximately 6 times more absorbable. The ultimate for effectiveness is sublingual life-formed DHEA Sulfate, since the sublingual route further increases absorption and bypasses the liver where 80 to 90% of encapsulated DHEA is de-activated before reaching the systemic circulation.

Since hormones affect mood, aging, and healing, hormonal imbalance can create dysfunction in both physiological and psychological states, including sexual performance problems: lack of sensitivity or desire, failure to achieve climax, dryness of the vagina, sexual melancholia, and sexual neurasthenia.

What Causes Hormonal Imbalance?

A major factor is environmental chemicals in food, water, and air: heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides, plastics, and other poisons that mimic estrogen in the body. It has been reported on news programs (CBS, Discovery Channel, etc.) that the common tin can is supplying unwanted, estrogen-like hormones as a result of a chemical reaction during storage between the tin and the plastic inner lining. These cumulative chemical exposures add a synthetic steroid that directly interferes with the normal function of the Endocrine System.

Within the Endocrine System, there are hundreds of different hormones. Why is DHEA so Important? Hormonal balance is essential to the maintenance of good health and a strong Immune System. Researchers have discovered that a number of hormones play a significant role with “T-cell markers” in the Immune System, most notably DHEA.

Researchers have seen an inverse correlation between DHEA levels and disease, meaning that the higher the level of DHEA in the blood, the less an organism may suffer from the disease.

Published studies have demonstrated that appropriate supplementation of DHEA could be a factor in decreasing the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, senility, Alzheimer’s disease, and premature death. DHEA has also shown the wonderful potential to actually slow the aging process.

More and more scientific support is emerging which calls for early supplementation of DHEA and its precursor, Pregnenolone, in order to maintain general hormonal balance throughout life. Studies have demonstrated that DHEA levels in our blood generally peak around 20 years of age and decrease to only 5% of our peak levels by the age of 80.

Female Function:

Uterus & Ovaries

The benefits of natural hormone therapy span all five body systems:

System 1: Flow (Urogenital & Muscular tissues)

• Maintain muscle strength and muscle mass.

• Improve sexual function and interest (libido). Reduced hormone levels can also cause vaginal shrinkage, itching, painful intercourse, infection and bloody discharges.

• Hormone deficiency can cause urinary tract infections, changes in the urethral opening, urinary frequency, and urgency plus inability to hold urine.

• Dropping of the uterus and vagina can be caused by reduced hormone levels.

• Reduce the risk of both endometrial and breast cancer.

For the 22 million American women taking the standard chemical hormone replacement therapy, synthetic progestogen, medroxyprogesterone acetate, also known as MPA or Provera® reduces the risk of endometrial cancer caused by synthetic estrogen, Premarin®, but 1 in 30 women get breast cancer due to this unnatural combination of synthetic drugs. Synthetic or unnatural hormones (e.g. equine estrogens) produce additional unnatural compounds in the body that may produce even worse effects than their parent compounds. For example, equilin is metabolized into 17 beta-dihydroequilin, which causes 8 times more endometrial growth than equilin itself. This can then lead to uterine cancer.

System 2: Support (Connective tissues: bone, blood, lymph, immune)

• Reduce hot flashes

• Decreased hormone levels can cause shrinking and sagging of breasts.

• Restore bone density and prevent osteoporosis, backaches, and fractures

• Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, angina, atherosclerosis, decreased endurance & stroke)

Conventional hormone replacement therapy with equine estrogens increases the risk of thromboembolism (stroke) by 200 to 700%. Synthetic progestogen therapy also cancels out any cardiovascular benefits from synthetic estrogen. According to Peter Collins, a scientist at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, “There appears to be a negation of the beneficial effects of estrogen by MPA but not by natural progesterone.”

System 3: Process (Digestive system, including liver)

• Reduce high cholesterol

System 4: Communicate (Neuroendocrine system)

• Reduce the risk of depression

• Improve sleep (insomnia, frequent waking), mood, memory, and concentration

• Prevent senility and Alzheimer's disease

System 5: Integrity (Skin and Mucous Membranes)

• Reduce vaginal dryness and thinning

• Low hormone levels contribute to atrophy, dryness, itching, bruising, and loss of tonicity of the skin and mucous membranes.

• Hormone deficiency also triggers unwanted facial hair, dry hair, and hair loss.

Using the natural approach to hormonal regulation also avoids other undesirable and dangerous side-effects of synthetic ‘hormones.’

“ImmuniTea” Rebuilds the Defence System

This combination is for chronically impaired immunity. Its tonic and immunostimulant properties are needed in all chronic immune dysfunctions including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), AIDS, cancer, and chronic hepatitis. It is useful in the prevention of bacterial and viral infections. It may be used along with other therapies in autoimmune conditions like Lupus and as a tonic to speed recovery from illness.

Astragalus membranaceus is indicated for chronic debility, immune depression, and fatigue. It helps regenerate organs, improves lung function, and corrects recurrent colds or chronic sinusitis. It is warming to help sensitivity to cold or cold extremities, stimulating cell metabolism and helping cells live longer. It increases, NK cell activity, antibodies, and interferon, and counteracts immunosuppression caused by aging, cortisone, radiation, and chemotherapy. It is used in nephritis and hepatitis. In one study, GPT levels normalized in 80% of subjects after 1 to 2 months.

Echinacea angustifolia is immunostimulatory against both bacteria and viruses, increasing phagocytosis. It is used in autoimmune conditions (e.g. SLE), allergies, respiratory congestion, acne, psoriasis, and eczema. It has been used historically even in life-threatening infections such as meningitis and cholera.

Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian Ginseng) is adaptogenic, improving resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stress factors, including viruses and bacteria. Long-term use decreases acute infections and absenteeism. One double-blind study of a thousand workers over a one-year period found a 40% decrease in absenteeism and 50% less illness. It maintains adrenal balance, preventing both atrophy and hypertrophy. Animal studies show it doubles lifespan after radiation exposure and it has been shown to increase immune function in cancer patients. It also reduces the side effects of radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, while improving healing and well-being. It increases survival times in patients with terminal illnesses. It benefits chronic bronchitis, atherosclerosis, and rheumatic heart conditions.

Directions: 5 to 7 droppers 3 times a day in water. Children under age 12, take up to 3 droppers 3 times a day in water. Do not take Astragalus and Eleutherococcus during acute infection or fever.

GI Tract

Friendly bacterial flora and adequate quantity and quality of dietary fibers are crucial to intestinal health along with a balanced diet and adequate intake of the best possible quality of water. The best water is an alkaline Microwater with Ericsson’s Alka-Mine Coral Calcium added prior to ionization. This provides an alkaline buffer with plenty of electrons to scavenge free radicals, resulting in a dramatic normalization of gut terrain and ecology beginning within days. Diabetics have even gotten off insulin with this type of support sustained over a period of time.

GI Herbs:

Gentiana lutea (Gentian)

_____________

Liver

The liver keeps blood sugar from dopping too low. It is also responsible for detoxifying the portal blood from the digestive tract, processing and storing nutrients, breaking down toxins and a myriad of other critical functions.

When the liver is stress and overworked, it can overact on the Pancreas. For example, bile can flow up the pacreatic duct and stress the Pancreas.

Liver herbs:

Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion)

Carduus marianus (Milk Thistle)

Chelidonium majus (Celandine)

5. Pineal

Melatonin

Time-release Melatonin is recommended within 30 minutes of going to bed. This helps with ease of falling asleep for those who find this difficult, while the sustained release factor helps maintain normal sleep through the night, in case this is a problem. The blood levels achieved throughout the night with sustained-release Melatonin are also much closer to the normal physiological pattern compared to typical melatonin supplements.

Melatonin also functions as an anti-oxidant, entering every cell in the body. Unlike other hormones, which are blocked at the cell membrane level, requiring intra-cellular messengers to carry their communication to specific target cells, Melatonin communicates the essential light/dark cycle of the environment to every cell in the body. This is crucial in synchronizing all body functions to work in harmony through the 24-hour ‘organ clock’ described in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The times represent the peak activity of each meridian and associated organs. The low ebb of activity would be exactly 12 hours away.

Time Meridian

11 AM – 1 PM Heart

1-3 PM Small Intestine

3-5 PM Bladder (includes Uterus or Prostate)

5-7 PM Kidneys

7-9 PM Circulation

9-11 PM Triple Warmer (Endocrine)

11 PM – 1 AM Gall Bladder

1-3 AM Liver

3-5 AM Lung

5-7 AM Large Intestine

7-9 AM Stomach

9-11 AM Spleen/Pancreas
